Toads

Toads are often the second most popular form of pet amphibian in the exotic pet trade and are closely associated with frogs. The distinction between frogs and toads is only slight, with toads also falling under the order of Anura.

The key differences between frogs, is that toads have shorter back legs (used for walking instead of jumping), fatter bodies, wartier and drier skin (adapted to dryer climates) and their eggs (spawn) is laid in long chains instead of in clumps.

Toads usually have much less colouration and often have brown leathery skin to help camouflage with their surroundings, often burrowing into the ground to escape the heat, they have no need to warn off predators with exotic skin colours.

However, there are still some very exciting and visually distinct toads available as pets, details of which can be found below in our toad caresheets.

The Oriental Fire-Bellied Toad is one of the most brightly coloured toads in the exotic pet trade and act as a warning to the poisons secreted when threatened. These make fun and interesting pet toads to keep at home.
